Dubai EatOuts #148: XIAO WEI YANG

Woot! Thanks to husband’s colleague, we found a Chinese steamboat (Hotpot) restaurant… Authentic too!!

The hot bubbly soup experience, dunking fresh ingredients, the smell of herbs and noisy chit-chatters reminds me of home…

Although the owners are from China, they do speak basic english which comes handy for non-chinese customers. And i get to put my Mandarin into good use too (thanks to my primary education in Singapore).

You know it’s authentic when crowds of Chinese families flood in after 8pm, chatting and slurping with hunger.

But the one thing missing, was my all time favourite saltish/savory diluted chilli sauce to dip.

Looks boring on the outside?
Bah! It’s about their flavourful herbal soups and the bubbly experience that matters!

Including 2 soft drinks, one large bottle of water, we (six of us) spent Dhs308… Mmm!

3D Sketches: The Bathroom (1)

One of my must-haves in my future bathroom, is a full-height glass shower cubicle!

It doesn’t have to be frosted… Crisp clear will do.

The Waiting Season

Work used to be bouncy and dramatic… But lately, i dread the uncertainty feeling waiting to know the outcome.
Though i’m busy enough to keep myself loaded with work, the waiting feeling can turn dull in my seconds.

While the husband benefits from his prospering career, here i am hoping for some fresh air elsewhere better and exciting… Soon!

My restlessness is back!

3D Sketches: The Living Room (2)

Okay i quickly sketched another living room randomly without thinking in depth about funtionality and it’s purpose.

One: Placing a cabinet high up isn’t an advantage to those who aren’t tall. And it does look tacky fitted into a sleek showcase wall unit.
Two: There’s still space for a typical furniture (ie.chair/ottoman).

Oh dear.

That’s what happens when i’m all excited sketching out ideas…

Dubai EatOuts #147: BARRIO FIESTA

I’ve never really tried Filipino cuisine/ cooking much. Upon reading an article in the local papers (early this year i think) about a newly opened authentic Filipino restaurant, i insisted to go and taste!

We’ve been regulars, dining in Barrio Fiesta eversince! Great service, meals fresh out of the kitchen consistently, thick rich gravies and the HUGE portion!

I delibrately zoomed into the large chunks of vegetables and meat, burps!

This place always reminds me of home… Asian faces, cooking style and ingredients!

We ordered:
1 pot of beef soup
1 stir-fry beans, pumpkin and tofu dish (with shrimp and coconut sauce/gravy)
1 medium sized bowl of rice to share
2 Lemon juice

Total bill was Dhs76.

We’ll always be back.

3D Sketches: The Living Room (1)

I surprised myself with a few crisp ‘Living Room’ concepts today. Maybe because weekend is around the corner…

Among my many favourites, i personally liked modern Balinese interiors, with lesser woody feeling/ finishes involved…
The sketch below highlights (in red) selections of tasteful teak furnitures, a neutral-coloured leisure sofa and, voila!

My much-loved dream living space!

We Prefer It Simple

I’ve been in an irritable mood this passing week. Mainly infuriated with people who persistently assumes we are wealthy and mighty enough to own luxury cars, high-end homes, jewelleries, and the list goes on…

If you’re one of them, here’s my response to your many assumptions about us…. Oh and answers to your “Why don’t you buy a car? You can easily afford it!”, “Why not reside nearer to the city (pricier rents), no??”.

Is it any of your concern if we prefer spending on taxi/ Metro train rides during our impermanent expat life here?
So what if we’re the minority that rather save and spend within our means and needs??
Does it matter if
we’re happy residing slightly away from the happening and lively expensive town??

Since being in this bling city, many we know – and noticed – splurge on (at least) a luxury purchase. Branded cars, gems, villas, weekly spas, weekly make-overs… All the wants money can buy.

And indeed, like most, we can afford too… But it was never in our veins to overspend and try playing rich to FIT into their ‘celebrity’ lifestyle!

Mainly because we both are, by default, simple contented beings. Period.

3D Sketches- Kitchen Ideas (3)

Not having much thoughts dressing up your tiny kitchen space?

Fret not! Plenty of space saving ideas can be found in home magazines/ books.

Here’s my idea to enjoy some cooking and food loving, a table for two, mini stove and a tall vertical cabinet-  for storage purposes- helps save the already cramped room.

Upcoming House Hopping(s)?

Weeks ago, Hubs and I had an interesting snuggly conversation about our recent thoughts of needing to house hop (like 3 times at least) before leading up to our permanent long-term home in New South Wales (Aust).
IF our plan Amazing doesn’t work out as prayed and hoped, plan Backup should smoothen our predictable cosy life here, and if all fails… Migrating back to Oz – to settle down permanently – earlier would suit us best, unless our careers takes either one of us away again.

Sigh, the thought of moving about so much beforehand, can be quite, bothersome!

3D Sketches- Kitchen Ideas (2)

Happy Thursday people! Soaked into the weekend mode, i sketched a more higher-end design. More cabinet space, granite counter top, branded quality sinks and an electrical stove!

Yes, monies can buy anyone a lush kitchen… And this idea, will be filed under my ‘big budget’ category.

3D Sketches- Kitchen Ideas (1)

Here i am at it again, sketching out loud my dream kitchen, paper after paper…

Neat lines, clutter-free and maintenance friendly are my wants in a kitchen, haven’t really thought about the colour scheme though.

Maybe neutral with a dash of red??

Many more ideas coming up!

A Short-Term Housewife, Maybe??

I’ve been pondering for some months now about being a housewife (short-term basis) while we’re here. The husband has been dropping suggestions that he’s happy to have me at home doing my own things, running chores, dishing up his fave foods and other wifey tasks. And even IF i chose not to, he’ll still be contented about it.

Truth is, I’m willing to settle at home for awhile… A tiny breather away from ANY work-related commitments is a definite way to cleanse those dusty brain cells of mine!

As of 2002-2010 the ambitious willful me have been – day and night, month after month -chasing my ‘perfect’ career, and it ain’t easy letting all go. Even for a short period of time. A designer’s salary range depreciates when he/she takes a break, a 6-8 months break is all it takes and you’re back to three quarters –of 8 years- years’ wages. This fact was based on my last research back in 2008. Not sure about 2010 onwards.

And of course I will miss my monthly paychecks for my own personal spending and savings. Though I have an option of either, I’m not even sure which is for the better. But I’m flattered to know that I get to stay home full-time – temporarily – whenever I choose to.

So if I lose/ resign my job any day, I’m thankful that I’ve learnt to place family/friends/church/personal life first.

Ohhh… I suddenly love how unpredictable my life is!

Dubai EatOuts #146: CARLUCCIO’s @ Dubai Mall

Weeks ago, we had a delicious breakfast experience in Carluccio’s, and because of their courteous and quality meals i decided to return, at The Dubai Mall outlet instead, for lunch.

I enjoyed lunching at THIS restaurant much more, spacious seating layout and wider food varieties.
Walking into the weekend crowd, we chose a table towards the corner… A window seat overlooking the 30-acre Burj Khalifa lake… Nice!

We ordered
1 Lasagna
1 Mushroom Risotto
1 Green Tea
1 Cappuccino
Total= Dhs160.

Love their rich monstrous portions (IMO)!

Sketching Days I Miss…

I think the last i held my fave Artline pen sketching away, was a year ago. Since being in my current job, producing modern and practical interior designs are not required of me, it’s mostly technical drawings -using Autocad software- and actively running the site supervising.

Yes, i missed those sketching days… It made me wonder if i’ve forgotten how to. You see, a year of sketch-less days (for me) tends to cause trendy ideas to go rusty!
As a designer, one has to constantly practice his/her sketches, read and absorb updated interior books/ magazines, who’s and what’s popular in the Interior Design world, attend exhibitions to further increase his/her knowledge and more.

Well you’ve guessed it. I havent been doing the above for nearly 2 years! So, the mouldy designer – me – began her practicing by sketching up some bathroom designs yesterday.

Oh dear, rusty indeed!

FYI, i rarely do residential designs, in my 8 years as an Interior Designer, i’ve always been exposed to commercial/retails/offices projects and i’m still liking it so far. I (IMO) find commercial spaces far more interesting to play around with.

The ONE time i will focus working on a residential project is designing my own home, someday. The joy of picking out fabrics, colours, themes… In my own sweet time…

BUT.

It will cost me ALOT of monies to build this dream!
Hmm… mayhaps this will be one of my many retirement plans.

Tickets to Aust Booked!

Woot!
We found (compared to other major airlines) the lowest flight prices to Sydney, I couldn’t stop pouncing when we saw the sudden reduced -by Dhs2000- fares just minutes ago! I swore it read Dhs13190 this morning! Love Emirates Air to bits!
I’m glad the bookings (2 adults return, 16hrs direct to Syd) are settled.

Countdown to December begins now…

Dubai EatOuts #145: CREEKSIDE

Japanese cuisine is one of my favourite food likes. From their delicate ways of sushi preparation to Teppanyaki live cooking!

As i was craving for an affordable authentic Japanese restaurant… Good reviews (mainly their buffet) i read recently led us to try CREEKSIDE, with hopes of a good a la carte dining experience.

Upon strolling towards the entrance, we were greeted with warm friendly smiles. Their crisp menu ranges from Appetizers to Bento sets, which   -i’m sure- satisfies any Japanese diners out there.
Hubs and i totally enjoyed the cosy decor/ ambience, prompt polite service and, especially their handsome portions.

We ordered 2 set menus  (Tori Teriyaki Teishoku and Chicken Katsu Curry), served with Miso soup and Pickles. Both sets were cooked-to-order which was the reason it took about 15-ish mins to arrive. Not forgetting the complimentary savory appetizer that came before our mains.

And oh, noticed the generous chunks of seaweed in my Miso Soup? Mm mmm!

Inclusive a pot of tea to share, the bill came to Dhs 208. It was worth every Dirham spent!

We’ll be returning to try their buffet deals someday.

Hello Thursday!

Happy Thursday people! Can’t believe weekend’s tomorrow… Sorta glad this stiff week skipped by without much fuss.

I was about to snuggle into my Thursday when, the many (usual)oogling perverts dampened my cheery mood!
You walk by them, they stare, you cross the road, they oogle… Argh!!

Sadly, it’s ‘normal’ here to be stared/ oogled at wherever you go, even when I’m decently dressed! Such filthy behaviour! My guess is they have never seen an average looking woman in their life… Tragic.

Though many wouldn’t mind the stares, I SO mind! Btw, there’s a difference between a quick glimpse and oogle alright, I KNOW how to differentiate.

And I’m wondering if anyone can be sued for visual harassment??

Oh, IF only I was ‘allowed’ to stab their eyeballs from afar!

Thursdays… Aaah.
